Shoe Statistics: How normal are your shoe habits?

Statistics may not have been your favorite class in school, but I found some fun statistics to test how normal your shoe habits are.

For example, in my college dorm room I have around 30 pairs of shoes at last count. How common is that?

Most Americans own on average 11 pairs of shoes, according to Eneslow, The Foot Comfort Center.  Forty-four percent of the 1,000 Americans over 18 own only one to five pairs. Twenty-eight percent own six to 10 pairs, 17 percent own 11 to 20 pairs, and 11 percent own over 21 pairs. The study was conducted by Kelton Research.

These numbers seem pretty low to me. Suze Yalof Schwartz of Glamour also found the number low and conducted a similar poll of Glamour readers. On the Glamour poll, the choices were a little different, but the most common response was 30 to 40 pairs, 33.97 percent of respondents. Only 13.07 said they own between one and 10 pairs. For full results, see here. This poll was less scientifically designed.

The same Eneslow study found that most Americans have three pairs of shoes that they do not wear anymore. Six percent have more than 10 pairs they don’t wear anymore.

Glamour found their respondents more likely to own shoes they don’t wear. Slightly over 36 percent said they have 10 or more pairs that they don’t wear. A little more than 34 percent said they don’t wear one to five pairs, 24 percent said they don’t wear six to nine pairs, and 5.29 percent said they wear all their shoes.

What do you think of the studies? How many shoes do you own? Do you wear them all?
